I hope I get cool super powers!

This is smooth.

April 7, 2021 - 16:39:42

But can’t I just shoot some bad guys!?

April 7, 2021 - 10:34:29

Paraphrased from an audiobook I’m listening to:

“The cell phone has become the interface of what is sacred in our life. We stand at the crossroads between the mundane and the sacred. The sublime and the profane. The systems we live within are unambivalent - the mundane has been chosen, the profane has been chosen…

“We are living in a world that has extracted the sacred so that all may be commodified. We live in technological incarceration far away from the community we evolved to be a part of, on a planet we have been trained to see as a resource rather than an ally. Our attention and awareness has been reduced to a commodity that can be bundled up and sold to advertisers.

“I wonder what the cost has been to you personally.”

I began the year thinking I wouldn’t be able to get the vaccine until the beginning of the next school year at the earliest… and I’m so excited today to find out that I’ll be eligible to get in 2 weeks!

April 2, 2021 - 16:53:52

I have been so divorced from current events and news lately that I hadn’t even realized we had a full-blown satanic panic underway AND uncovered a child trafficking congressman that claims he’s just being targeted in a $25 million extortion plot involving Iran and a missing Jewish FBI agent.

“The birth of a man is the birth of his sorrow. The longer he lives, the more stupid he becomes, because his anxiety to avoid unavoidable death becomes more and more acute. What bitterness! He lives for what is always out of reach! His thirst for survival in the future makes him incapable of living in the present.”

Head turns 90°.

February 13, 2021 - 09:49:47

Power came on at 10:30 pm last night…

… only to go out again around 1:30 in the morning.

February 12, 2021 - 23:10:47

……. and the power is back out.

February 12, 2021 - 19:44:07

Power back on. The house dipped to 49°F, or 9.4°C for my unit-sane friend. Twas a bit chilly.

February 12, 2021 - 08:38:58

Dear Diary,

We remain without power. It is possible we may have to resort to cannibalism… Aurora is already looking at me as if I’m a giant dino chicken nugget. This may be my last entry.

January 22, 2021 - 11:31:24

I just finally got to see Dr. Fauci’s briefing from yesterday. He looks about 20 years younger. Must be nice to finally have a team ready to listen to actual science.

January 21, 2021 - 19:37:19

Kerrie just showed me a video from four years ago as they headed down to that massive women’s march in DC. What a long four years it has been.

By the way, we still never received those checks from George Soros!!! I’m beginning to think that wasn’t a real thing…….

January 21, 2021 - 02:32:04

I have to say as I’m closing out the night and thinking of today’s events, it was only after watching the normal not-off-the-rails press briefing that it dawned on me that things were indeed different. I wouldn’t have been surprised to find out this was just an episode of the West Wing I had some how missed. It was almost frighteningly normal.

January 20, 2021 - 20:09:08

A presidential press conference without delusions of grandeur or painful incompetence.

January 20, 2021 - 16:14:13

To be hopeful and not ashamed of who is sitting in the White House… I don’t even know how to process it after this four years of utter darkness.

January 13, 2021 - 14:37:18

Sorry “gentleman” from Georgia, healing begins first with accountability. Not simply ignoring past transgressions.

January 6, 2021 - 20:55:17

I hope we come up with a nice name for what happened today: the Militia Cosplay Insurrection, the Beer Gut Rebellion, the Meth Mouth Massacre… the Trumpanzee Treasonous Event. I can go on all night.

January 6, 2021 - 16:04:34

Myself, and I’m sure plenty of law enforcement, want to thank all the protesters in the (not-so-million) moron march for ensuring that they document and share evidence of their own crimes.

January 6, 2021 - 14:56:37

We’ve let a two-bit reality show host do this.

January 6, 2021 - 14:39:35

Arrest Trump for the disgusting instigator of sedition and treason that he is.

January 6, 2021 - 14:19:30

I’m watching the (not-so-million) moron march on the Capital Building. Instead of coming up with ideas people like, they want to cry foul and storm the Capitol.

This is what happens when you destroy the education system.

November 15, 2020 - 16:13:04

I have a terrible feeling again…

November 13, 2020 - 16:15:54

The 30th named storm of the year.

It should be noted that the Atlantic ocean has on average 12 named storms a year.

November 13, 2020 - 11:10:59

Future Hurricane Iota.

November 12, 2020 - 10:50:06

2020 is just one of those years…

November 12, 2020 - 10:35:45

Future Tropical Storm Iota.

November 9, 2020 - 22:47:56

Subtropical Storm Theta has formed. This is the 29th named storm of the season and this makes 2020 officially the most active Atlantic season on record.

November 9, 2020 - 17:05:17

Where is Tropical Storm Eta going? Who knows… honestly. Maybe Eta will still be cruising around for the 2021 hurricane season. 🤷‍♂️

November 7, 2020 - 17:56:09

I’ve seen this going around and anyone with even a little knowledge about the constitution knows this: no, there is no constitutional basis for a concession. Trump doesn’t have to concede for the next person to take office. At all. Zero. It is a tradition, and like most of our traditions, Trump is going to 💩 all over it.

November 7, 2020 - 15:03:54

Watching my 15 year old cry as Biden was announced as the president-elect is the kind of feel good moment I’ve been longing for.

It’s a long way to go, but to finally get some sort of decency back will be the long dream become reality.

November 5, 2020 - 23:20:43

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”

November 2, 2020 - 20:38:22

The news out of Nicaragua and Honduras is going to be delayed and likely terrifying.

November 2, 2020 - 19:18:15

My fear for Nicaragua and Honduras has now become dread.

November 2, 2020 - 16:28:48

This is looking more and more like a major humanitarian disaster in the making. Category 4 over the mountainous regions of Central America. There will be rampant flooding and landslides from the rainfall. The storm surge will inundate the coastline.

And this reaching category 5 before landfall is not out of the question…

November 2, 2020 - 13:14:39

Eta is now a major hurricane.

November 2, 2020 - 11:03:42

We’ll likely see another major hurricane this year as Eta is currently undergoing rapid intensification.

Slow moving, the rainfall and storm surge will be devastating. Rainfall totals reaching 30 inches in mountainous areas… I fear terribly for the people in Eta’s path.

October 31, 2020 - 23:31:35

2020 is now tied with 2005 for the most tropical storms in one year.

October 4, 2020 - 19:13:21

Record breaking season keeps on going. Tropical Storm Gamma and Potential Tropical Cyclone Twenty-Six look like they might both affect the United States now.

October 4, 2020 - 11:55:45

About Tropical Storm Gamma and a real threat to the Gulf Coast States towards next weekend by a very likely Hurricane Delta.

October 2, 2020 - 11:58:55

……….. I’m 40!?

September 22, 2020 - 00:01:16

Between Paulette’s formation on September 6th and today, 7 (!!!) other storms have formed.

September 21, 2020 - 16:09:45

So if Portland is now an anarchist zone or some nonsense and they’re going to halt federal funds, does this mean we can stop paying federal taxes?

If Trump and his ilk can halt funds because they don’t like our politics, can I halt our money going to them for the same reason?

September 21, 2020 - 13:34:11

I hear we in Portland are now living in an “anarchist jurisdiction” based on Trump policy and implemented by Attorney General Barr.

I hope people understand how utterly ridiculous and dangerous this is. Trump and his team are pulling out all of the authoritarian tricks. There is no anarchy here. At all. Just protests that get out of hand at night in a small section of the city. A block or two at most.

This is getting extremely dangerous. Trump is pulling this country apart on purpose.

September 21, 2020 - 12:51:53

So many storms to catch up on.

September 21, 2020 - 01:56:27

Remember back in school when you’d hear a few kids whine about having to study science or math? How they would say, invariably, that they wouldn’t need to use it as an adult. Remember all of those people? Well, they didn’t learn anything and now here we all are…

September 20, 2020 - 16:32:24

This old storm is still kicking.

September 20, 2020 - 11:09:01

The Atlantic continued to be active.

September 18, 2020 - 20:13:50

I would make some witty remark about following the Republicans rule about not letting a president nominate a supreme court pick before an election…

….. But I’ve just got nothing left in me.

September 18, 2020 - 17:42:14

3 storms in one day……

September 18, 2020 - 13:11:10

I’m dizzy… Subtropical Storm Alpha has formed off the coast of…..

Portugal.

As in the Northeastern Atlantic… as in the European Portugal…

September 18, 2020 - 11:54:54

Woah…

September 18, 2020 - 11:38:24

For only the second time since tropical cyclone naming began, we have exhausted the season’s list.

September 16, 2020 - 00:56:18

So I just went on a bit of a rant on the Portland National Weather Service page, but damnit I get tired of metrologist getting ridiculous hate for not being able to predict weather 100% of the time with 100% accuracy. So, I ranted. I’ll paste it here as well because I worked a while on it in my phone and I do not want to lose it. Maybe I’ll expand it one day, publish it, and title it “Weather: It Really Is Complicated” or maybe something snarky.

Imagine, if you will, the beautiful swirls of color that you see on a bubble that has just been blown. They dance, spin, twirl along the surface. The different areas interact with each other. Each swirl influences the others by how thick and/or how fast they move.

That’s the simple explanation. In reality, there are many… many more variables. Some known, some hypothesised, others unknown. Attempting to predict the movements of those oily swirls on the surface of that bubble is doable to a certain degree, but the variables are many and the predictions would not be very precise.

Now, expand that bubble to the size of Earth and give it a thickness of about 10 miles. This gives you a total volume of nearly 2 billion cubic miles - give or take a handful of million miles.

To predict the weather, you must be able to account for the known, possible, and unknown variables at each level of the atmosphere since it is a three dimensional thing. We always think of weather as this thing on earth that affects us, but weather is fluid and dynamic. It moves like rivers not only along the surface but into the sky. The wind can be blowing out of the east weakly at the surface but become an impressive 200 MPH beast blowing out of the west just a few miles above you. In addition, temperature changes, moisture differences, air pressure gradients… again, varying at any point between here on the ground and many miles up, all affect the weather on the ground and must be considered to accurately predict the weather in advance.

So, to predict if the wind will blow the smoke away from the western edge of the United States with 100% accuracy down to just the part of the day, you must be able to also 100% accurately predict the swirls and eddies of a kid’s bubble, expanded over millions of square miles of surface, then multiplied by the height of the weather producing portion of the atmosphere.

The fact that we can predict wind changes over a small part of the earth with an error of a couple of days is a damn miracle of science and modern computing.

September 14, 2020 - 22:27:17

A bad time for the Gulf States over the next few days…

September 14, 2020 - 15:07:03

I just found out that this is only the second time in our records that there were 5 active tropical systems in the Atlantic. The other time was Spent 1971.

September 14, 2020 - 14:07:40

Hurricane Sally is close to the Gulf shore… but it’s moving so slow it’ll take another two days for the center of circulation to make landfall. Another devastating blow to these states.

September 14, 2020 - 11:07:32

I can’t recall the last time there were 5 active storms in the Atlantic… At present, we have:

Hurricane Paulette Tropical Depression Rene Tropical Storm Sally Tropical Storm Teddy Tropical Storm Vicky

Also, a tropical wave off of Africa has a chance to develop next weekend.

The next three storm names are: Wilfred, Alpha, and Beta.

September 14, 2020 - 10:02:26

Truly this is a special year…….

September 13, 2020 - 09:37:58

Just a quiet day in the tropics… 🥴

September 12, 2020 - 21:53:48

… …

September 12, 2020 - 17:23:06

Another new tropical system has spun up this afternoon. So now we have Tropical Storm Paulette, Tropical Depression Rene, Tropical Storm Sally (threat to the gulf states, hurricane watches posted), and the new Tropical Depression Twenty.

On top of this, there are still two areas being watched above and beyond these.

I’m a little dizzy.
