I just went on a 10 minute rant about the inadequacies of the storytelling in the Star Wars prequels. The fact that Anakin was a whiny teenager because he spent his adolescent years being told he was the chosen one and he was all powerful. That’s going to give any kid a big head and a tendency towards tantrums. I also feel they could’ve driven home a fantastic point that bringing “balance to the force” was misunderstood by the Jedi through their own pride as self-proclaimed defenders of the force. Balance is not maintained by getting rid of the other side. However, by Anakin becoming Darth Vader and getting rid of the Jedi, then the rebellion coming back and getting rid of the Sith Lords, Anakin really did bring balance to the force: all the people claiming to have ownership of the right way to use the force was removed.

Anyways, Ryker just looks at me and says, “uh huh, so are you going to play with me or not?”

This is the next storm to watch. All indications suggest this’ll be the next major hurricane. That wave to come off Africa also looks ripe.

When listening to the news about Afghanistan… please remember one thing: Afghanistan, as a country, is a made-up construct. There is little weight given to national identity. There is no loyalty to a nation-state. The individual tribes are of prime importance in that region. Afghan itself is just an ethnonym for the Pashtuns. Thus, Afghanistan means “land of the Afghans” or “land of the Pashtun”.

While the nation-state holds the tribe Afghan in its name, there are so many tribal areas that a CIA map of recorded tribes for the area is incomplete and contains some areas that just read “misc tribes”.

Afghanistan’s government and army folded because the borders of that country mean little to the individuals living there. The tribal borders are what matter.

Edit: I also wanted to add… we have been in Afghanistan for TWENTY YEARS (!!!). The power structure we helped prop up lasted a few days. Twenty years! A few days.

Here’s the extremely short summary for those not present when I was on my soapbox: Star Trek writers, choose one - big story arch or monster-of-the-week. Trying to drag two styles along makes it that I have a hard time caring about either.

Nine years ago!?

I met Laurell Showers when I was 15 years old. That summer of 1996, we did a lot of things together. Walking around, just hanging out, the fair, my only stint at a church, camping… and then circling each mosquito bite on my arm to count just how many got me (left arm, a little over 100). Just as we were celebrating your 13th birthday I joked that you should “enjoy it, it’s all downhill from here”.

What I didn’t realize at the time was just how bad things were for you then. How you were a beacon of light with so much darkness is a strength I will never comprehend or possess. It wasn’t downhill from there. You were getting closer to everything becoming right.

Our paths parted just a few years after we met. Outside of Facebook we only saw each other once. A coming together for reasons I won’t put here, but a righteous cause I was honored to assist in and overjoyed at you and your’s victory.

May your beautiful spirit live on in the memory of those around you.

And just like that, it’s over. The temperature dropped nearly 40° from a high of 115° to 75° over the span of 4 hours. It is expected to drop down to 65° before sunrise.

What a wild ridiculous ride.

Portland, Oregon, reached 112 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, breaking the all-time temperature record of 108 Fahrenheit, which was set just a day earlier.

Over 100º at 10am. Happy that today’s the last day of this. We’ll be back down to a chilly 98º tomorrow.
